Mr. Naran is a South African national with over 16 years’ experience in formulating investment strategies and managing investment portfolios for some of the world’s largest institutional investors, with a strong focus on alternative investments across the globe, including private equity, infrastructure, commodities, insurance-linked securities, frontier markets and hedge fund strategies.
Mr. Naran is currently the Head of Investment & Actuarial at the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) in South Africa, the largest pension fund on the African continent with approximately $140 billion under management. He serves on the Investment Committee of the Pan African Infrastructure Development Fund, the largest infrastructure fund in Africa, and represents the GEPF on the advisory council that oversees the United Nations supported Principles of Responsible Investment (UNPRI) initiative. He is also a Member of the Social Finance and Impact Investing Committee of the Institute of Actuaries (UK) and a Member of the African Leadership Network.
Prior to returning to South Africa, Mr. Naran spent 13 years in the UK, most notably at the investment office of the British Steel Pension Fund, one of UK’s remaining internally managed funds, and at the investment advisory business of HSBC. Mr. Naran has also been involved in a number of family owned businesses operating in Southern Africa.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Actuarial Science and Insurance and Risk Management from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and is a CAIA Charterholder.
